Professional Background
Michael J. Waxman, MD MBA retired as Medical Director of the Intensive Care Units and the Progressive Care Unit at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO in 2021. He then joined a private practice of Intensivists who staff the medical surgical ICU at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO. For the past 41 years, he has been in the practice of pulmonary critical care medicine. He began his career as a pulmonary critical care physician in the US Air Force, followed by work on the faculty of Washington University then spent 36 years in the practice of pulmonary critical care at Research Medical Center. As a teacher in the KU School of Medicine since the 1980’s, he now holds the position of Education Professor, University of Kansas Medical Center where he has a joint appointment in the School of Medicine and School of Nursing. He is the simulation director of the internal medicine residency at HCA Overland Park Regional Medical Center and the family medicine residency at HCA Research Medical Center
Dr. Waxman is a 1976 graduate of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, where he completed an internal medicine residency and fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. Dr. Waxman graduated in May 2012 from the Executive Fellows MBA program at Rockhurst University in Kansas City and has taught in their MBA programs as an Adjunct Professor of the Helzberg School of Management.
In addition to his long standing commitment in critical care medicine, Dr Waxman has been just as intimately involved in the education of learners of all professions. As a lecturer, program director and developer of educational programs, particularly involving simulation, he has constantly looked to create new and more innovative ways to understand how to improve patient outcome and patient safety.
