5 Best Horror Movies Wrestlers Starred In (& 5 Worst)

Whenever it comes to the world of acting and professional wrestling, there's a fair bit of overlap. It makes a lot of sense, after all, considering that half the job of a wrestler is to act. Along the way, former WWE stars such as Dave Bautista and Dwayne Johnson have become arguably more known for their acting, than their wrestling.

While today's wrestlers have starred in some amazing movies over the years, they have also been a part of some cinematic disasters.

That being said, the horror genre is known for its bad movies, more so than its good ones. With that in mind, it shouldn't be a shock that there have been many terrible flicks starring professional wrestlers. Although, there were some good ones along the way as well.

10 Worst: Doom Starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Feels Like Nobody Who Worked On This Film Ever Played The Video Game

Release Date

October 21, 2005

Starring

Dwayne Johnson

Box Office

$58.7 Million

2005's Doom is considered to be one of the worst video game films ever and that's saying something. Despite a cast of Karl Urban, Dwayne Johnson, Rosamund Pike, and more, this horror action film downright sucked.

It failed to break even at the box office, and the reviews were even worse. There were about a million better ways to make Doom, and instead, they opted for about as generic of a movie as possible.

9 Best: Mohawk Starring Brodie Lee

Brodie Lee's Lone Acting Role Deserves More Love

Release Date

July 15, 2017

Starring

Brodie Lee

Box Office

Not Applicable

2017's Mohawk was a film that didn't get a lot of praise, or attention upon release. That's honestly a massive shame, considering that this WWE Studios horror movie starring the late Brodie Lee was actually quite good.

Without spoiling the film too much, it's set in the early 1800s and follows a Native American woman fighting back against American soldiers. Lee's role in this film is relatively brief, but it's still a great movie overall.

8 Worst: Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night Starring Kurt Angle

This Horror-Comedy Was A Box Office Bomb

Release Date

April 29, 2011

Starring

Kurt Angle

Box Office

$5.8 Million

One name that isn't really discussed in terms of wrestlers-turned-actors would be Kurt Angle. While the former Olympian has been in a lot of movies, not many of them have been much of any good, if at all.

There are many wrestlers who have taken on some crazy movie projects over the years.

His role in 2011's Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was likely one of his biggest. Although, his big-budget comic book action-horror-comedy didn't do well at the box office, nor with reviewers.

7 Best: No One Lives Starring Tyrus

Tyrus Is Seemingly A Better Actor Than A Wrestler

Release Date

October 10, 2012

Starring

Tyus

Box Office

$974,918

There is something funny about the fact that some of WWE Studio's best films barely got any attention. In 2012, they released the horror film No One Lives, starring Brodus Clay, who was then a member of the WWE roster.

This film isn't anything too crazy and is a bit generic. Still, it's a fun watch that has some wild kills and big jump scares and is probably the best thing that Tyrus has ever done.

6 Worst: 3-Headed Shark Attack Starring Rob Van Dam

Yes, This Is A Movie That Really Exists

Release Date

July 20, 2015

Starring

Rob Van Dam

Box Office

Not Applicable

In case it's not clear by now, it's going to get very, very rough from here on out when it comes to bad movies. Rob Van Dam, in terms of pure acting credits, is right up there with names such as John Cena and The Rock. Sadly, he's been in very little that's actually good.

However, 2015's 3-Headed Shark Attack is so bad that it's almost good. Van Dam is trying his best here in this straight-to-DVD film starring Danny Trejo, but it's clear that the budget of this film was about $7.

5 Best: See No Evil 2 Starring Kane

This Sequel Deserved Much More Attention

Release Date

October 21, 2014

Starring

Kane

Box Office

$1.6 Million

The original See No Evil was a high-budget film that got a theatrical release, was promoted on WWE television, and more. Meanwhile, the sequel was pretty much the exact opposite in every way, save for the return of Kane.

While some wrestlers have played movie characters similar to their gimmicks, others were totally different.

This film wasn't discussed much, but was good for what it was. It was definitely a generic film, but the performances from Kane and Katherine Isabelle were quite good. It was also reviewed quite well.

4 Worst: See No Evil Starring Kane

A Big Budget Doesn't Equal A Good Movie

Release Date

May 19, 2006

Starring

Kane

Box Office

$18.6 Million

It's clear that Lionsgate and Vince McMahon were hoping that See No Evil could become a big horror franchise. However, the first installment in 2006 made that hard to become a reality.

This film was little more than torture porn, which was a common theme for horror films in the 2000s. Furthermore, while there was a larger cast and budget for this movie, it was impossible to tell.

3 Best: Gremlins 2 Starring Hulk Hogan

This Comedy-Horror Is A Classic For A Reason.

Release Date

June 15, 1990

Starring

Hulk Hogan

Box Office

$41. 5 Million

To be fair here, Gremlins 2 is far more of a comedy than a horror. Still, it's classified as a horror film, so it counts. Plus, it's a genuinely great classic from the 90s that deserves a mention. Naturally, they have one of the biggest staples of the '90s, Hulk Hogan, in the film.

The Hulkster only makes a brief cameo here, and his role is incredibly small. That being said, this one is still worth a watch if wrestling fans haven't seen it already.

2 Worst: River Of Darkness Starring Multiple Wrestlers

Multiple Legends Starred In This 2011 Flop

Release Date

March 29, 2011

Starring

Kurt Angle, Kevin Nash, Sid Vicious

Box Office

Not Applicable

G2 Pictures decided to bank on loading up on not one, not two, but three wrestlers for this one. River of Darkness was a straight-to-DVD horror film released in early 2011 and featured Kurt Angle, Kevin Nash, and Sid Vicious.

This film had a shoestring budget, and it was clear it was just a cash grab for all involved. Although, this movie is so bad that it falls into the fun category to an extent.

1 Good: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done Starring Dave Bautista

This Werner Herzog Flick Was One Of Dave Bautista's First Roles.

Release Date

December 11, 2009

Starring

Dave Bautista

Box Office

Not Applicable

Werner Herzog is one of the more unique directors in film, and 2009's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done is proof of that. This horror drama has an all-star cast, including Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, Michael Pena, Brad Dourif, and more.

Dave Bautista is the wrestler in this film but is only in it briefly. Still, he plays his role well, and this film is still interesting to watch nearly 15 years later.
